Rail Systems Investments

While rail systems investments are more "behind the scenes" than other aspects of Metro, these projects play a major role in keeping Metrorail service safe and reliable. These investments are organized into two subcategories:

  • Signals and communications, including replacement and upgrade of Metro's signaling system and a project that replaces Metro's outdated internal communication and public safety radio systems.
  • Propulsion system maintenance and upgrades, including reliability improvements for the electrical system that powers the Metrorail system.
Here are a few featured projects:

New Advanced Signaling System

Metro's train control signal system is over 40 years old, obsolete, and unreliable. The replacement and upgrade of this vital system is among Metro's state of good repair priorities. Metro is currently working to identify and plan for the implementation of automated signaling system technology.

Underground Cellular & Radio Project

This project replaces Metro's outdated internal communication and public safety radio systems. This includes the public safety radio system, the Metro area radio system, and cellular services throughout the system, allowing customers to utilize cellular service while underground.
