Solar Sails is a sculptural wall installation composed of dichroic glass joined with a steel framework. The site-specific artwork is inspired by the surrounding space to create a unique sense of place and identity. The dichroic glass is activated by the natural light. It reflects different colors depending on the direction of the light, its intensity, and the movement of the viewer. Installed on the station's exterior wall, Solar Sails conveys a sense of movement and travel. Metro's art collection has two artworks by Ray King. Largo Lens was commissioned for the Downtown Largo station in 2004.
Ray King is well known for his use of dichroic glass. He first trained as a stained-glass apprentice. In 1975, he received a Louis C. Tiffany Fellowship to travel to England and study with master-stained glass artist, Patrick Reyntiens. King has received numerous site-specific commissions, and his work is on view throughout the United States.
The artwork was commissioned by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority as part of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project.
