About Art in Transit
The Art in Transit Program brings visual and performing arts into the heart of the Metro system, transforming stations and facilities into dynamic public spaces. Spanning Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, the program connects customers, neighborhoods, and artists through permanent and temporary art installations, live performances, and community-driven projects shaped by a wide range of artistic perspectives that enrich the transit experience.
What You Will Experience
- Permanent and temporary site-specific public art including sculptures, mosaics, and murals at Metro stations and facilities.
- Digital art programming: rotating digital artworks and animations featured on stations screens.
- Live performances: music, dance, and spoken word events in transit spaces.
- Poetry: short-form poetry displayed on station screens as part of the National program Poetry in Motion®.
Advancing Metro's Vision Through Art
Art in Transit supports Metro's commitment to safe, reliable, and welcoming transportation by enhancing public spaces through art. Guided by a team of experienced public art professionals, the program contributes to the agency's strategic goals by:
- Improving the customers' experience by creating engaging and inspiring environments.
- Building regional partnerships with artists, cultural institutions, and community organizations.
- Creating lasting value by integrating art into long-term infrastructure.
By turning stations and facilities into cultural landmarks, the Art in Transit Program strengthens the connection between transit and community, offering customers a meaningful and memorable experience. Our mission is to enhance the transit environment and elevate the experience for all who use it.
