Pod Trees for Naylor, 2002
Robert Cole (1939-2013)
Stainless steel
12' h x 15' diameter (x2)
Pod Trees for Naylor are hand forged stainless-steel trees with canopies that reach fifteen feet in diameter. They are visible upon entering and exiting the station. The branches of each tree support a playfully elegant collection of machine-spun steel pods that make up the trees' canopies. The trunks are massive and forceful in their graceful support of the canopies. The steel was cut, welded, and hammered by Robert Cole to create surfaces that change with natural light. The artist used the strength and endurance of steel to create a natural image, reintroducing nature into the built environment of the station.
Robert Cole is a nationally recognized Washington, D.C. sculptor who is best known for his forged steel sculptures of people, animals, and trees. His work can be found in private and public collections throughout the Metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
