Train Surfing Isn't Fun, It's Fatal!
Train surfing is a very risky behavior that involves riding on the exterior of a moving train, often on the roof, on the side or, between the train cars. This behavior is extremely dangerous and oftentimes fatal. Engaging in train surfing has led to numerous fatalities and severe injuries.
Safety First
Train Surfing is NEVER safe. Train surfing almost, always results in serious bodily damage or death. Understanding the risk may prevent you or someone you know from train surfing.
Critical Dangers of Train Surfing
- High Voltage Hazard - the electrified tracks used by WMATA carry up to 750 volts of direct current (DC). Coming into contact with these tracks can result in severe injury or death.
- Clearance Risks - the clearance between the train and tunnel walls or overhead structures is minimal, usually not more than six inches. Even a slight misjudgment in positioning can lead to being smashed between the train and the tunnel wall or struck by an overhead structure, which can cause serious injury or death.
- Pinching and Crushing - when trains navigate curves or inclines, the space between the train cars can decrease rapidly. This creates a high risk of being pinched or crushed between cars which can cause serious injury or death.
- Unstable Surfaces - The exterior surfaces of trains are not designed for passengers. They are unstable, and slippery, and can result in loss of balance, leading to falls from significant heights which can cause serious injury or death.
- High-Speed Movement - trains travel at high speeds, with significant wind forces that can easily knock a person off the train which can cause serious injury or death.
