Winter 2025 Major Construction

Project Overview

In Winter 2025, Metro performed major construction on the Green Line. From Dec. 16-30, 2025, Metrorail ran a single track in both directions between Georgia Av-Petworth, Columbia Heights, and U Street stations on the Green Line to accommodate planned work to improve Metro's customer experience. The actual construction took place at U Street and Columbia Heights, but customers at Georgia Ave-Petworth were impacted by the single-tracking through U Street station.

Affected stations remained open for the duration of the construction. Green Line trains operated every 16 minutes between Branch Ave and Greenbelt, while Yellow Line trains ran every 8 minutes between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq on both weekdays and weekends.

Once construction ended, the planned Yellow Line extension to Greenbelt began on Dec. 31. Half of Yellow Line trains now operate between Huntington and Greenbelt and the other half operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Square.

Construction Activities

During this construction project, crews completed infrastructure repairs and planned improvements, including:

  • Replacing rail and fastening systems
  • Renewing communications and signal equipment
  • Restoring lighting infrastructure
